The exercise we just completed is a simple rule of thumb method to help guide you, the consumer, through this tough decision.
REPAIR YOUR SYSTEM (6 or less)
If your "decision factor" is 6 or less, you should most likely repair your system. We say that because of this factor your equipment is relatively new, which means it is either relatively efficient, in good condition (aside from the current issue), remains comfortable, has not caused any problems thus far, or you are not moving out soon enough to justify the economic cost of replacing the system.
EITHER / OR (7 thru 13)
If your decision factor lies between 7 and 13, you may need some help from a Home Comfort Advisor. There's no need to worry because either way you choose is probably fine! For your consideration, here are a couple of specific examples:
The equipment in your house has lasted 8 years, but it keeps you comfortable. It needs major repairs now, but you plan to move next year. Since you won't be in the home long enough to reap the benefits of a more efficient system, you should probably fix the equipment before the move. The only problem in this scenario is the resale value of your home, which greatly depends on the value of your existing system. Your Home Comfort Advisor can assist you here.
It has kept your home comfortable for eight years. Almost 12 percent of your investment in a new system component must now be spent on a major repair. While an upgrade to your existing system will be more costly and likely require some financing, you will live in the house long enough for the savings to pay back your investment. Further, replacing your existing system today will allow you to put your home on the market with a 7-year-old system, not one that needs immediate replacement and impacts your home's resale value!
REPLACE IT! (14 or greater)
You should seriously consider replacing your system if your decision factor is greater than 14. In spite of the fact that replacing your system could cost more than repairing it, modern system options will allow you to keep your home more comfortable and will pay off most, if not all, of your investment before you move out. New systems add value, provide comfort, and save energy!
